Non-drinkers and non-smokers, what sad or creepy things made you give up alcohol and cigarettes?

All I can say is that I know that my family keeps a secret from me. My grandfather did not actually die of heart disease, but in a drunken state, in a fit of rage, he tightened the noose around his neck. Interesting to hear your answers.
