Review: Wines of Vale do Bomfim, 2026 Releases

Vale do Bomfim is what happens when an internationally beloved Port dynasty decides to behave like a regular winery, or at least makes a credible showing of it. Part of the Dow side of the sprawling Symington family empire, it leaves the fortified fireworks to the better-known labels and carries on with the business of creating Portuguese table wines. The result is a neatly grounded, highly affordable lineup of whites and reds from native grapes, which is either a reassuring sign of regional fidelity or the sort of thing that makes the marketing department’s job exponentially easier.

Recently, Symington Family Estates also became the first winery in Portugal to achieve B Corp Certification for its environmental stewardship and sustainability, meeting fairly rigorous standards in demonstrating its commitment to renewable energy and sustainability.

2024 Vale do Bomfim Douro White DOC Review

Immediately bright and composed, this blend of Viosinho (30%), Rabigato (30%), Gouvelo (20%) and Arinto (20%) was originally a private offering only available to guests of the vineyard. It opens with a clean, profile largely mineral-driven. On the palate, lemon salinity gives it lift, while notes of honeydew melon and quince cut through to make this quite approachable. Crisp acidity and a subtle thread of slivered almond add just enough edge to keep it lively and refreshing. This remains an excellent value at twice the asking price. Symington had every reason to retain this blend’s exclusivity, and it’s a win for the public that they didn’t. A- / $15

2023 Vale do Bomfim Douro Red DOC Review

This is a bold red proudly flaunting the family resemblance. Prune and rhubarb set the tone early, delivering a ripe character that edges toward Port-like tendencies without diving into the shallow end headfirst. The fruit runs deep and generous, almost borderline enthusiastic, but a note of dark chocolate adds a little polish and weight in the middle. As it moves to the finish, the wine pivots just enough to stay grounded and introduces a touch of licorice as the dark fruit diminishes. It is an unapologetically flavorful bottle, but with enough structure, balance and restraint to avoid becoming a value-wine sugar rush in disguise. B+ / $15
