Review: 2022 Casadei Sogno Mediterraneo Toscana IGT

Sogno Mediterraneo Toscana IGT is a GSM blend, unusual for Italy and especially rare to find sourced from a Tuscan vineyard. The vines for this wine were planted in 1999 and are farmed using organic and biodiversity-friendly farming principles. The grapes are picked by hand and fermented with native yeast in a mix of cement tanks and terracotta amphorae, then aged for over a year in French oak barriques. Somehow the price is held to just 22 bucks.

Inky black in color, this dense wine loads up on balsamic notes, helping to temper aromas of roasted meats that might otherwise dominate the experience. Tarry and earthy as it develops in glass, the drinker is greeted with a layer of mushroom before a violet-laced floral quality comes into view. Brilliantly fruity on the finish, the wine closes out with a bold reprise of lightly vinegary currants and underripe blackberries, spritzed with dark chocolate syrup. A powerhouse wine that requires a powerhouse meal to back it up.
