Does the quality of what you drink actually affect how you feel the next day?
It kind of sounds like cope but there are a few things to know about that could help your hangovers.
Congeners
When alcohol ferments, it produces more than just ethanol. The other compounds, called congeners, contribute to flavor, color, and aroma. They’re also part of why different drinks the night before might make you feel a bit different the morning after.
Darker spirits usually run higher in congeners than lighter, more filtered options. Higher congener content also tends to be associated with more pronounced after-effects, which is part of why a night on cheap whiskey often feels different than a night on the good stuff.
Pacing matters just as much
When you’re enjoying what’s in your glass, it’s pretty common to slow down, and slowing intake is a really big deal. Your liver processes alcohol at a fixed rate (roughly one standard drink per hour), and giving it more time to keep up makes a real difference.
What quality doesn’t do
It doesn’t make you immune. Hydration, sleep, food intake, and total volume consumed all play a bigger role in how you feel the next day than the quality of what you drank.
Better alcohol can contribute to marginally better mornings, but it’s way more important to drink water, eat something, and don’t push past what your body can reasonably handle.
What’s your experience like?
