Review: Buchanan’s Green Seal

Buchanan’s, hot off its Buchanan’s Pineapple release, is back with another new blended Scotch, and while it’s not a flavored expression it is described by the company as “pulsing with ritmo” and “bursting with tropical fruit and spiced notes.” The twist here is that the whisky is made with wine yeast, not slices of pineapple.

It’s aged in bourbon casks and bottled with no age statement in a unique circular, green decanter. Let’s try it.

Buchanan’s Green Seal Review

A bright shade of gold, the whisky looks fruity and inviting, and the nose keeps the theme going. It’s very fruit-forward, an aromatic mix of apple and pineapple, showcasing modest vanilla and caramel notes behind. There’s a spicy character here, a little dusky clove tempering the sweeter elements, later evoking a hint of mint.

The palate is exuberant with its fruit and sweetness, here stronger with apple and lighter citrus notes, featuring both orange peel and bitter lemon. The cereal impact of the malt is evident but not overwhelming, providing a gentle shortbread character that gives the midpalate a cookie-like flavor. Paired with the fruit, it can come across a lot like biting into a lemon bar, complete with a sprinkle of toasted coconut across the top. This completes the journey to the finish, which is dessert-like in multiple ways, featuring lingering notes of coconut, caramel, and crushed graham crackers.

Fans of unabashedly sweet Scotch whiskies will find Green Seal to be an easy, easy favorite. I won’t dare fault you for falling in love with it, even if in the final analysis it feels perhaps a bit single-minded.
