Review: 2022 Penfolds Bin 600 Cabernet Shiraz California
You surely know Penfolds as an Australian winery with both heavy hitters and everyday drinkers in its arsenal, but of late the Aussie empire has stretched its arms to California winemaking, too.
This blend of 66% cabernet sauvignon and 34% shiraz is a reported 20-year-long endeavor and is the result of (some) grapes grown in California which were planted from Australian cuttings, alongside other fruit from around the state.
Boldly minty on the attack, this is a wine for the fan of big, herbaceous bottlings of aggressive varietals. Overtones of rosemary, dried sage, and cigar tobacco leaf kick things off, lingering forever before a big finish that evokes roast beef and coffee, until spicy menthol takes over center stage. The herbal overtones are endless, but quite appealing if paired with the right meal.
B+ / $50
