why does grain alcohol hit so much harder than normal? (at same abv)

like even when mixing to about the same abv, grain based alc just hits soooo much harder than any “normal” vodka or (cheap and shitty) whiskey or anything else i usually mix with tbh. is there science behind this or am i just being schizo and it’s all my head. bc i’ve always head like “ethanol is ethanol” but idk how true that is. or is it like there’s different by products or something that really alter the effect?

edit: i mean using everclear 190 as a mixer instead of normal cheap 40% alc
