Review: 2022 Frescobaldi Nipozzano

Wow, the last time we reviewed this wine was in its 2010 vintage release. For those out of the know, Marchesi de’Frescobaldi is one of the pinnacles of Tuscan winemaking, yet you can readily find affordable bottlings like this one on the market with little effort.

2022 Frescobaldi Nipozzano Riserva Chianti Rufina Review

This year’s expression of Nipozzano is surprisingly dry, its fruit restrained in favor of heartier tannins and a brambly, drying underbrush quality. Notes of cloves and, especially, anise dominate the finish, both serving to lift up some of the earthier overtones and adding some at least implied acidity to the experience. The finish remains dense and mushroomy, with a balsamic edge that gives the finish a gentle sourness.

The wine’s price point — largely unchanged over the years — remains its strongest quality, a huge value in DOCG Chianti with a per-glass price of less than 4 bucks. No complaints.

B+ / $17
