Review: 2023 Coppo L’Avvocata Barbera D’Asti DOCG
Coppo‘s latest barbera is a very soft expression of the grape, and this wine sees the lightest touches of strawberry and maraschino cherry balanced by notes of lavender and lilac. A layer of vanilla softens the proceedings up even further, leading to a finish that is actually more than a little sweet. Time in glass helps more evocative notes of boysenberry to perk up, with hints of milk chocolate on the finish. At 15% abv, this is an unusual expression of barbera, which normally comes across with more acidity and a darker fruit character. That said, it’s fully approachable and surprisingly versatile — though it works better as an aperitif than as a pairing with a big Italian meal.
