Review: Angostura 1824 Rum (2025)
It’s been 10 years since we tasted Angostura’s 1824 rum expression, one of its top offerings, named in honor of the year of the founding of the distillery (and bitters producer) in Trinidad & Tobago. Let’s crack a fresh bottle and see if anything has changed in the last decade.
Angostura Caribbean Rum 1824 (2025) Review
Notably, the 12 year old age statement has been eliminated from this expression, the back label mentioning only that it is a “blend of gold rums.” (Since we received our sample, the name changed again, to Angostura Founders Reserve 1824, complete with a new bottle and label.)
There’s a decidedly spice-driven quality here, giving the nose a Christmassy vibe and, moving from cinnamon and nutmeg into aromas of raisins and figs. Chocolate and vanilla are standing by, waiting for your call.
The palate is quite sweet and feels plumped up with brown sugar, the chocolate and vanilla forming a confectionary base. Cloves and macerated cherries fill in the gaps from there, followed by a finish formed around butterscotch and marzipan. There’s a hint of chicory and anise on the fade-out, but this is restrained, never enough to overcome the intense sweetness and unctuous fruitiness of the palate. The long denouement of coffee and nuts present in prior expressions of this rum aren’t readily visible here anymore. At this price, you’ll find more interesting products on the market.
80 proof.
