Why does drinking gives you a sense of confidence

Whenever I drink, i get this weird sense of confidence and clarity. It feels like I can conquer the world. Why does this happen. Why can’t I get this feeling when I’m sober. Is there a way to stimulate the same sense of feeling with something that is not as harmful as alcohol?
