Drink of the Week: Rhum Barbancourt 8 Years Old 5 Star Reserve Speciale
Rum is often top of mind during the warmer months that bring thoughts of tropical cocktails and paper umbrellas, but wintertime is one of our favorite times to reach for a bottle, and among our go-tos is Barbancourt.
The Barbancourt distillery has been crafting award-winning rhum in Haiti since 1862, starting with founder Dupré Barbancourt, who passed his rum-making legacy all the way down to Delphine Gardère, who currently oversees operations.
The Barbancourt range spans from rhum blanc to aged reserves, but one of our favorites is their 8 Year, which is an elegant rhum full of character. Made from 100% sugar cane juice, this rhum is double pot–distilled and aged for eight years in French oak, yielding a smooth and expressive spirit.
With its balanced layers of fruit and spice, it makes an excellent Rum Old Fashioned or Rum Negroni and can even be sipped neat for a cozy nightcap. And though this bottling is certainly one we’ll be looking to when warmer months roll around and we’re switching to summery Mai Tais, in the meantime, we’ll happily embrace its warming character all winter long. $35, 750 ml; blackwellwines.com
