Review: Tres Tribus Mezcals (Updated 2026)

Like your mezcals on the softer side of things? Check out Tres Tribus Mezcal. The company, founded only in 2023, comes from the same folks behind Mijenta Tequila, and the operation now boasts six different expressions of the classic spirit. The mezcal is made “using pristine water from the nearby Tidaá volcano aquifer and a hand-built still that incorporates local elements from the region.”

We’re consolidating all Tres Tribus coverage here, so watch for updates over time.

Tres Tribus Mezcal Espadín Review

This  is intended as a “delicately smoky” offering — and that bears fruit. You can tell right away from the nose that you’re getting into leans more into gentle elements of baked apples and lemon peel, backed by a smokiness that evokes barbecued almonds, then smoked beef — but in the distance, not in your face.

The palate is sweet and citrus-forward, featuring juicy mandarins, Meyer lemon, and a gentle grassiness that meanders toward herbal notes of thyme and rosemary. Smoke is even more of an afterthought on the tongue than on the nose, evoking flavors of barbecued lemon, touched with a bit of black pepper. Again there’s a kick of almond, plus some well-toasted marshmallow, and a layer of pastry cream to wrap things up.

Extremely easy to sip on, and it mixes very well, too. Try it in a margarita.

Tres Tribus Mezcal Espadín Edicion Especial Review

This is an “ancestral” style mezcal, cooked in a conical oven, fermented in ahuhuete vats, and double distilled in clay pots. The results are initially somewhat in line with the standard Espadin edition, but even softer and more fruit-forward. Those who aren’t fans of overtly smoky mezcal styles may well find the subtlety of this rendition makes for a decidedly approachable presentation.

Baked apple notes are particularly hefty on both nose and palate here, dragged through buttery brioche, vanilla custard, and a sweet lemon curd character. The herbal elements of the standard bottling are almost absent here, replaced by the lightest wisps of smoke, toasty cookie dough, and a significant, sweet mandarin character. The finish is so juicy that it feels like a squeeze of orange has been liberally applied to the spirit, giving the conclusion a very brisk and quite acidic climax.

Bright but balanced, this is a real delight that may well challenge your preconceived notions about what mezcal is “supposed to” taste like — converting non-believers and delighting the faithful alike.
