Review: 2000 Sandeman Vintage Porto
It’s not every day we get a chance to review a vintage Port release, and it’s especially rare to find a 25 year old expression in our inbox.
Sandeman‘s 2000 vintage Port was bottled in 2002, but some bottles appear to have been held back for this celebratory release, 25 years after its harvest.
The nose is a classic of the style, though far from the blown out dessert experience that’s common with vintage Port: raisin and cherry notes are about equal in prominence, with notes of blood orange peel adding a bit of zip to the experience. Surprisingly fresh and youthful, this is a vintage Port that still seems to be nowhere near its peak.
The palate is rather soft, milk chocolate and a touch of that orange peel leading to some darker tones with time in glass, including more bittersweet chocolate and some anise. Dried cherry remains prominent, with the chocolate-cherry finish feeling particularly festive. Mint and some vanilla add quiet hints to the conclusion.
