Review: 2015 Cos d’Estournel Saint-Estephe

We’ve covered the wines of Chateau Cos d’Estournel, a second-growth wine in Bordeaux’s Medoc-situated St. Estephe region, in the past, but today we’re digging into a special treat — a decade-old vintage of the producer’s flagship bottling that is still available for purchase in a newly reissued 10th anniversary edition.

The wine is a Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend with 23.5% merlot and 1.5% cabernet franc rounding it out.

2015 Cos d’Estournel Saint-Estephe Review

Quite dry and elegant, this is Bordeaux with a level of sophistication that only emerges with plenty of time in the cellar. Pretty florals and tea leaf notes give the nose a lift, but they meander their way to a gentle and not at all overwhelming body that layers in light notes of anise and eucalyptus, dropped atop more insistent notes of blackberry, cassis, and leathery tannin. This wine is never pushy with oak, but rather explores its terroir in earnest. Modest notes of tarry asphalt keep everything low to the ground, trudging through ample wet earth, finishing with hints of bay leaf and rosemary. At 13.5% abv, you can tell it’s quite light on its feet, even if they end up rather covered in mud.
