Review: 2022 Castel Sallegg Pinot Noir
We’ve tasted the wines of Castel Sallegg in the past, but never a pinot noir from this Alto Adige operation, which tends to focus on more traditional, native, mountain-friendly varietals.
This expression of the iconic grape blends the smoldering fruit of a classic pinot noir with the gritty sensibility of northern Italy, layering earthy, almost gravelly notes atop a core of underripe raspberry and cherry elements. Layers of rhubarb and rosemary provide a biting, sour-bitter quality as the finish builds, perhaps the least pinot-like part of the experience but also the most Alto Adige-adjacent quality. The wine finishes clean though gritty with tannins; drinkers may justifiably love it or hate it, depending on their expectations.
