Drink of the Week: Slow & Low Maple Old Fashioned

On my way out the door to a Halloween party, I wanted to grab a festive bottle. While I’m often expected to make cocktails (go figure), I didn’t want to lug a bag full of bottles on the subway, so I opted for a classic cocktail in a bottle—the new Maple Old Fashioned from Slow & Low. Requiring nothing more than a glass of ice and maybe an orange twist, the Slow & Low is an easy crowd pleaser.

An early entrant in the ready-to-drink (RTD) category, Slow & Low was created in 2008 by Rob Cooper (founder of Cooper Spirits, which also launched St-Germain) and inspired by an old family recipe from what was then known as Hochstadter’s Rock & Rye. Like many spiritous concoctions, the combination of rye whiskey and rock sugar (often with citrus added) was originally served as a medicinal remedy. After Slow & Low hit the market, a renewed interest in the historical RTD swept the mid-aughts shelves.

The newest in their expanded product lineup—now including options like a rye-based Old Fashioned and a coffee-infused version, all bottled under the Hochstadter name—the Maple Old Fashioned launched this October in tandem with a Cherry Old Fashioned. Well-timed for the autumn season, the Maple Old Fashioned is made using organic, estate-produced syrup from Crown Maple. Sweet to be sure, the bottled cocktail still maintains a nice balance from the spicy rye whiskey—just add ice. $29.99, drinkslowandlow.com
