Review: Wines of Aviv, 2025 Releases
Aviv wines are a new line released by Galil Mountain Winery in Yiron, Israel. Aviv means “spring” in Hebrew and is intended, the website explains, to represent “young, fresh, fruity, easy drinking wines designed for enjoying in restaurants.” I’m not sure what makes a wine more suitable to enjoying in a restaurant than at home, but perhaps we’ll see. At present, there are three Aviv wines. Today we will be sampling the white and the red, and they also make a rose. The wines are kosher but not mevushal (the difference is explained here). Let’s give them a try.
2024 Aviv Red – 50% Syrah, 29% Petit Verdot, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot. As advertised, this wine is indeed fresh and fruity, offering enticing and rounded aromas of plum and blackberry along with a touch of oak. The palate follows suit, also showing plum and blackberry as well as some cherry. The wine shows medium to high acidity and gentle, drying tannins on the medium length finish. For the price, this is a great kosher wine that will pair well with a range of foods such as burgers and grilled chicken. B+ / $18
2024 Aviv White – 65% Viognier, 18% Sauvignon Blanc, 17% Chardonnay. Poured in the glass, this wine offers gentle, flowery aromas along with notes of lemon, pineapple, and apple. The palate, unfortunately, does not live up to the nose. Notes of lemon, pineapple, and apple can be found, but they are muted and just don’t play together very well. The wine ends up tasting like flavored mineral water with medium acidity. Disappointing. D / $18
