Review: Wines of Mi Sueno, 2025 Releases

The wines of California’s Mi Sueño (“my dream”) have been surprisingly absent from our site since 2018, and today we plan to remedy this situation by taking a look at four of their recent offerings. For a quick orientation into the amazing history of this particular winery, I would advise you to check Christopher’s review of its 2015 Los Carneros Chardonnay.

2022 Mi Sueño Rutherford Valley Dos Sueños Cabernet Sauvignon – True to the style of Rutherford Cabernet, this strikes a confident balance between dark fruit, spice, and earthy depth throughout. The nose offers wild berries, toasted oak, and a note of turned earth, gradually evolving across the range. On the palate, juicy notes of blackberry and currant take the lead, followed by darker tones of chocolate and tobacco leaf. Wines of this weight and structure are usually enhanced with time in the cellar; this one shows a readiness to deliver on polish and accessibility now. Generous, decadent, layered, unmistakably Rutherford in its character, and pretty great stuff.  A / $125

2022 Mi Sueño Los Carneros Chardonnay – Balanced aromas of oak, stone fruit, and orange zest share the spotlight in harmony at first. With time, layers of vanilla, toasted almond, and pear all arrive fashionably late, helping to prevent things from steering too far into fruit-driven excess. A fine streak of minerality provides structure and lift while heading towards a clean and polished finish. A subtle tone of apricot emerges right at the end, leaving a final impression that’s delicate without being too precious. It’s an effortless glass that doesn’t demand attention but captures it anyway through its elegance. A- / $55

2023 Mi Sueño Russian River Pinot Noir – This Pinot Noir does not rush things, and first impressions can be deceptive. Cherry and raspberry show up at first, but it’s not too overbearing. Eventually, a touch of stone and clove appear to round things out and provide much-needed depth, but even this takes a bit of time and a few swirls of the glass. Things shift into a higher gear on the palate, with raspberry opening things up before wandering into the sweeter territory of vanilla, cherry cola, and pomegranate. The wine calms down on the finish, with the wet stone returning as the fruit fades. Pairing this with a nice plate of meats and hard cheeses is the right move. B+ / $65

2023 Mi Sueño Unico Vino Blanco – One of the newer additions to Mi Sueño’s portfolio reads like a shopping list of familiar ingredients: Sauvignon Blanc (78%), Chardonnay, Semillon, Viognier, Albariño (5% each), and Riesling (2%). On the nose, aromas of guava, pear, and wildflowers rush forward with a sense of urgency. It’s not imbalanced and makes this surprisingly approachable when slightly chilled. With time, things expand, as notes of orange zest, vanilla, and lemongrass undulate over one another. The palate makes another bold shift, with minerality balanced by lemon curd and apricot, leading to a long and layered finish. If looking for something different without venturing into risky business is the order of the evening, this is a gamble that pays dividends nicely. B+ /$55
