Review: 2021 Donnafugata Mille e una Notte Sicilia DOC

Donnafugata recently dropped a special edition of one of its most noteworthy wines in honor of the release of The Leopard on Netflix. We haven’t seen the show (which is set in Sicily, which Donnafugata also calls home), but we did taste the wine.

Mille e una Notte (“1001 nights”) has always been one of the highlights of the Donnafugata lineup, a blend of nero d’avola, petit verdot, syrah, and more. This expression is especially dense — more so than the typical presentation of the wine — laden with anise and pencil lead, then moving into a thicker, gummier tar quality. It is, to be frank, a bit much at times, though paired with a peppery Steak Diane it might be just the ticket, dripping with notes of extracted raspberry gastrique, dark chocolate, and some tomato-cranberry elements. The finish is long and unrelenting. 1001 nights, indeed. Hold for 5-8 years, if you can.
