Review: 2024 Sonoma-Cutrer Chardonnay Sonoma County

Here’s something of a surprise: Sonoma-Cutrer recently released its first sauvignon blanc with a Sonoma County designation. Sonoma-Cutrer of course has many sauvignon blancs in its arsenal, but the very general Sonoma County designation has never been used until now.

Led by their Director of Winemaking Cara Morrison, the Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc showcases the brand’s commitment to innovation and the natural evolution of its French-inspired, cool-climate portfolio rooted in Sonoma’s distinct terroir. Sonoma County’s diverse microclimates, soil types and proximity to coastal influence provide the ideal setting for crafting this delightfully crisp Sauvignon Blanc.

At just $25, it’s certainly accessibly priced, so let’s dive in.

Crisp, acidic, and heavy with lemon peel up front, this wine settles into a groove that is lightly tropical, but also laced with minerals. Notes of dusky coconut husk pair with brisk elements of guava and grilled pineapple, with a bite of rhubarb lingering. It’s grassy on the finish, but the finish remains quite tart and lemon-forward, edged with toasted coconut. You could do a lot worse with a California sauvignon blanc — though here you’ll also see how the style is taking a turn toward more tropical vibes, for better or for worse.

B+ / $25
