Italian Rose Review: Tenute Ulisse and Pasqua 11 Minutes
Thus far in 2025, we have tried and (generally) enjoyed rosés from Argentina and France, and have looked inward to upstate New York and California. With the dog days of late summer imminent, now feels like an ideal time to take a pair of sensibly rosé wines from Italy for a properly chilled test drive.
2024 Tenute Ulisse Rosé Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOP – A friendly and fruit-forward wine with persistent aromas of raspberry, strawberry, and Bing cherry, eventually making room for rose petals to exude qualities reminiscent of a gentle perfume. Strong acidity adds a touch of lemon zest and peach continuously present throughout the finish. Quite an approachable companion to have chilled under a poolside cabana or patio umbrella with a tray of snacks. B+ / $20
2024 Famiglia Pasqua 11 Minutes Trevenezie Rosé IGT – The Pasqua family believes with full conviction that 11 minutes is the optimal length of time required to extract the best from their grapes, hence the name. This rosé certainly delivers a surprising amount of brightness and charm in equal proportion, with evolving aromas of strawberry, citrus peel, chamomile, and dandelion rising from the glass over time. On the palate, it’s focused and crisp, with a lively acidity shaping a juicy core of cherry, strawberry, and orange zest. There is a sweetness running throughout, bordering dangerously close to excessive and almost syrup-like at times, but it never manages to go overboard. A- / $20
