Review: 3 Wines from Famiglia Casadei, 2025 Releases
Famiglia Casadei is a diverse company that owns wineries across Italy. What ties these wineries together is Famiglia Cadedei’s dedication to ethical farming and sustainable wine making. As they explain:
For Famiglia Casadei, viticulture represents a sustainable way to give back to the environment while crafting terroir-driven wines with a deep sense of place. Its sustainable approach has been woven into an innovative ethical protocol called Biointegrale which combines the Organic, Biodiversity Friend, and Demeter certifications bringing farming to the next level.
Because of this approach, the three wines we are trying today are produced with a range of grapes from different regions, but they are all organic and grown using sustainable practices. Let’s give them a try.
2022 Tenuta Casadei “Sogno Mediterraneo” Toscana IGT – 70% Syrah, 15% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre. This wine from Tuscany opens with fruity aromas of deep plum and blackberry as well as herbal notes of mint and oregano. It also smells a bit boozy. The palate follows suit with fruit and herbs but there is also a savory component introducing a bit of salt and umami. There is good acidity here and an enjoyable, medium length finish showing drying tannins. This is a surprisingly complex wine that maintains admirable balance, particularly for its price point. A- / $22
2022 Castello del Trebbio Chianti Superiore DOCG – 85% Sangiovese with the rest comprised of native varieties Canaiolo and Ciliegiol. The nose is reserved, offering gentle fruity aromas of blackberry and sour cherry, as well as a slight herbal note. On the palate, the fruit comes first and hits as a bit bolder. Blackberry and sour cherry are joined by black pepper and mingle nicely with the wine’s ample acidity and bold tannins. The wine has a velvety mouthfeel and the finish is medium in length. This isn’t a complex wine, but it is quite enjoyable and very approachable. It would pair easily with a range of foods from pizza to steak. B+ / $16
2024 Olianas Vermentino Di Sardegna DOC – 100% Vermentino from the southern region of Sardinia, the signature region for the grape. This wine offers bright notes of candied lemon on both the nose and palate along with medium acidity. It is a solid example of vermentino but not very complex. B / $20
