Review: Jose Cuervo Reserva de la Familia Extra Anejo Tequila 2025 Edition

After a lengthy hiatus, our coverage of Jose Cuervo’s Reserva de la Familia Extra Anejo expression recently returned with the 2024 release, and now we’re back with a look at 2025’s bottling.

As always, this Extra Anejo comes with a custom wooden box, this one designed by contemporary Mexican artist Ana Segovia. Per Cuervo: “The custom piece, titled “No Señorita, Esos Colores son Prohibidos” explores traditional charrería attire and encourages reflection on this symbol of Mexican national identity.” 2025 also marks the 30th anniversary of Reserva de la Familia, making this year’s release particularly prized.

Also, remember that Reserva de la Familia is now available in various other expressions beyond Extra Anejo, including Platino, Reposado, and Cristalino.

Let’s dig in.

Jose Cuervo Reserva de la Familia Extra Anejo Tequila 2025 Edition Review

Drew’s 2024 review remarked on the continuing theme of spice as a core component of this tequila, and it continues unabetted here. The nose is toasty and laden with spice cabinet notes, running from cinnamon and nutmeg to cloves. Toasted oak and roasted agave add tannic elements to the aroma, complementing notes of roasted vanilla bean, white pepper, and shiso leaf. Time in glass helps some fruit emerge, namely grapefruit peel.

On the palate, the tequila is remarkably dry, dominated by crisp notes of cooked agave, gently sweetened with brown sugar and cocoa powder — but restrained, never blown-out with sugar notes. Cinnamon is a constant, with a sultry, dusky blend of white pepper and cardamom. Almond cake, butterscotch, and gingerbread notes provide the core of a soothing, almost chewy body. Again there’s some citrus that emerges late in the game, more lime and lemongrass here than grapefruit, but it’s enough to perk up the finish to give it a cleansing quality on the fade-out.

Extra anejo at the top of its game? Look no further. Cuervo’s still got it.

80 proof. NOM 1122.
