Review: Wines of Quinta da Fonte Souto Florao, 2025 Releases
From a distance, Portugal feels like an ever-evolving country forever at the crossroads caught between two ways of thinking, and somehow it all comes together in harmony. Old-world charm meets easy-going contemporary ambiance, with cobblestone streets winding past modern architecture and art galleries, and exciting Michelin-starred restaurants booked months in advance reside on the same street as a dive kitchen using lawn chairs and folding tables. It’s home to two modern football’s greatest heroes, yet it has to win a World Cup.
In many respects, Portuguese wine follows suit: there are plenty of expensive, quality options from which to choose, but then there are also some steals to be found. Today we take a look at two wines for Portugal that fall in the latter category, courtesy of Quinta da Fonte Souto Florão: a new project from Portugal’s Symington family located in the southern region of Alto Alentejo.
2021 Quinta da Fonte Souto Florão Red – The aromas on this wine are surprisingly complex for a $20 wine, with damp earth, roasted plum and a mild instance of black tea arriving sequentially. There’s a throughline of restraint as the wine also eventually presents black currant and something faintly mineral with time the glass. On the palate, the fruit holds the center, with notes of blackberry and cherry registering first, eventually joined by dried herbs and black currant on the lingering finish. A- / $20
2024 Quinta da Fonte Souto Florão White – This blend of Arinto and Verdelho grapes is amiable but pronounced, with notes of chamomile, honeycomb, and lemon zest on the nose. Lemon zest and grapefruit lead on the palate and pretty much hold court throughout. It’s medium-bodied but never soft, giving it a heightened lift without being too abrasive. The finish of orange blossom hangs around for a bit, before a slightly salty note arrives to keep things from getting too floral. B+ / $20
