Review: Wild Common Tequila Anejo

Wild Common is a Jackson Hole, Wyoming-based tequila company founded by, of all people, National Geographic photographer Andy Bardon. While the operation has a three expressions and a mezcal on the market, we have never had a chance to review any of them — until this fourth tequila, an anejo, came along.

The 100% highlands agave anejo ages for 14 months in ex-bourbon barrels before bottling at an overproof 47% abv. Let’s give it a whirl.

Wild Common Tequila Anejo Review

Rather than the more typical amber, a rather bright, yellowish color immediately surprises. It could easily pass for reposado — or some other spirit altogether.

The nose fits the part, however, offering an aggressive vanilla note that pairs with herbal agave and some spice — pickled and fresh jalapenos, torched rosemary, and a dash of white pepper. Breathe deep and notes of torched orange peel make an appearance, which would be fairly cleansing if not for the higher abv, which fires up the nostrils.

The palate keeps things on course, offering a heavy vanilla and milk chocolate quality that eventually meanders its way more into dessert territory before returning to its herbaceous roots. Nutella and almond butter make for a creamy base atop which a dollop of pastry cream adds more decadence — and a rich, full body. That bright green herbal note comes roaring back in short order, again showing jalapeno notes, plus green onion and rosemary. The higher proof remains noticeable as the tequila clings to the palate, though the more soothing elements of the tequila offer a welcome, tempering quality.

Definitely a solid pick for fans of more of a yin-yang anejo tequila experience.

94 proof. NOM 1123.
