Review: Tequila Herradura Blanco

Tequila Herradura makes a silver tequila already, so what’s the point of this blanco — which is a totally separate thing? Look closely and you’ll find that Herradura Silver is aged for 45 days before bottling — hence the light yellow color. Herradura Blanco is the straight stuff, bottled straight off the still with no aging. (It’s also bottled at a higher abv, 46% abv.)

Herradura Blanco is not exactly a new expression — it’s been produced since 1870 — but it is new to the U.S. as of this year.

Let’s dig in and taste.

Tequila Herradura Blanco Review

Clean and clear, the tequila offers a clean, classic nose of fresh, cooked agave backed up by herbs — particularly spearmint, which comes across with some real power. Layers of cinnamon, nutmeg, and white pepper continue the spice-driven theme and add additional character — all on point and gloriously margarita-friendly.

The palate is just as clean and crisp, its gentle lemon notes really making the case for sipping this straight. Again the pepper is white, tempered and mild, the herbs light and complementary, with touches of rosemary and thyme that ring the edges. Lime leaf hits hard on the finish, and time in glass — 30 minutes or so — coaxes out a heavy vanilla character that surprises, considering this tequila is unaged.

All told: Outstanding, worthwhile stuff — and something I’ll definitely be reaching for come my next margarita hour.

92 proof.
