I’m not sure if this is the right sub for this question, but I’ll give it a shot either way.

I’m assuming most people here enjoy a drink here and there so why, on average, do you think Americans have such a strange relationship with alcohol?

Like the ghost of prohibition remains. Maybe the legal drinking age, open container laws, public intoxication penalties, and regulations in general affect the way most American see alcohol consumption and makes it still tabooish.

What i mean is I’ve rarely seen casual alcohol consumption and I’m aware it varies significantly depending on the state but in my experience kids turn 21, abuse alcohol in college and never really learn to drink like adults. A glass of wine with dinner, a glass of fortified wine after dinner or maybe a couple of drinks after a business meeting, etc.

The only objective difference that I find with countries in Europe, for example is the fact that after lot of us carry firearms, which takes an extra step and makes spontaneous drinking more complicated.

I don’t know if any of you have noticed the recent trend in demonizing alcohol in social media, blaming the substance instead of people’s tendency to abuse it, the same goes for sugar, other simple carbs, things that are not necessarily healthy but nowhere near as unhealthy as people think if consumed with moderation.
