Review: Good Trouble Bourbon

American civil rights icon and longtime congressman John Lewis passed away on July 17, 2020, at the age of 80. Among the many elements of his enduring legacy is his famous call to action: “Get in good trouble, necessary trouble, and help redeem the soul of America.” Inspired by those words, Good Trouble Bourbon was founded in 2023 by restaurateur and entrepreneur Dee M. Robinson.

With the hopes of becoming a symbol of resilience, purpose, and the courage to challenge the status quo, Good Trouble Bourbon encourages drinkers to seek out their own form of “good trouble.” Its mission centers on promoting unity, inclusivity, and positive change, using the cultural resonance of bourbon as a catalyst for community engagement and dialogue. A portion of each bottle sold supports the Shine Your Light Foundation.

Good Trouble Bourbon is distilled by Green River Distilling Co. in Owensboro, Kentucky. It originates from Green River’s flagship mashbill of 70% corn, 21% winter rye, and 9% 6-row malted barley. All barrels included in the blend are aged for a minimum of four years. Bottled at 92 proof, the bourbon is presented in striking packaging designed to reflect its bold ethos.

The brand poses a compelling question to its audience: “Are you a Troublemaker?” With its elevated message and distinctive presentation, the bourbon invites exploration—not only of its ideals, but of the spirit itself. Does that actual bourbon command enough presence to create some good trouble? Let’s seek the truth and find out together.

Good Trouble Bourbon Review

The bourbon opens with a floral nose that brings to mind jasmine and ripe peaches. Notes of dried apple chips and vanilla sugar contribute to an aromatic profile that is pleasant, though restrained. The influence of oak and the high-rye mashbill is limited on the nose, resulting in a lighter nosing impression. On the palate, a distinctive combination of key lime pie and almonds sets the tone, creating an interesting and unexpected opening. As the tasting progresses, flavors shift toward white pepper and dehydrated strawberries, maintaining a consistent lightness in texture and weight. The mouthfeel aligns with the nose—delicate and refined, rather than assertive.

The finish adds a bit more dimension. German-roasted almonds lend depth, accentuated by a touch of soft leather. As the flavors fade, peppermint candy lingers, offering a refreshing conclusion. While the finish displays a bit more impact from the oak and rye, it still leans toward the restrained side.

As a resident of Owensboro, I initially expected Good Trouble to be a scaled-back version of Green River Kentucky Straight Bourbon. However, it’s clear that this expression has a distinct blending identity. Though it’s lighter in profile than what I typically reach for, there’s a place for it—particularly as a gateway bourbon for those exploring the category. Good Trouble offers a solid introduction for newcomers looking for an approachable and thoughtfully crafted pour.

92 proof.
