Drink of the Week: Minty Liqueur de Menthe des Alpes

Because of the pervasive heat wave smothering New York and a wide swath of the country, I was craving refreshment in any form. Gazpacho? Watermelon? Mojitos? Yes, please. It seemed the perfect opportunity to open a bottle of the new mint liqueur from Burgundy-based distillery Pegasus. The Minty Liqueur de Menthe des Alpes delivers exactly what the name promises.

Produced with organic ingredients and sans any artificial flavors or coloring, Minty is made with a neutral grain spirit base distilled from organic French wheat. Three types of mint—orange, Japanese, and Moroccan, all harvested in Valais, Switzerland—are macerated and distilled separately before being blended into the alcohol and sweetened with organic cane sugar. The result is an extra aromatic liqueur with a complex mint flavor, both bright and subtly citrusy with a deeper herbaceous note on the finish.

Though avoiding the often cloying quality of a typical crème de menthe, the Minty liqueur is still sweet enough to stand in for simple syrup. I opted to mix a classic Mojito by nixing the sugar and adding a pour of the liqueur to tone down the sweetness and dial up the mint character. But it would also be delightful as a cooling spritz with an herbaceous aperitif, or any cocktail where you want to up the refreshment factor. $43, pegasusdistillerie.myshopify.com
