Review: Cold Zero Whiskey

In the rich and evolving landscape of American whiskey, some bottles do more than just tell a story — they give back. Across the country, distillers are blending tradition with purpose, donating portions of their proceeds to support causes close to their hearts. Among them stands Cold Zero Spirits, a veteran-owned whiskey brand rooted in service, sacrifice, and a commitment to community.

Founded by Chad Williams, a 25-year military veteran and former Green Beret who served throughout the Global War on Terror, Cold Zero Spirits embodies the values forged in the crucible of special operations. Operating out of Cedar Ridge Distillery in Swisher, Iowa, the brand is driven by a mission beyond the bottle. A portion of all profits supports military and first responder organizations, including the Special Forces Foundation, Green Beret Foundation, Big Sky Bravery, and more.

In an effort to break away from convention, Cold Zero Whiskey doesn’t follow the typical mold. Williams partnered with Cedar Ridge’s master blender Murphy Quint to craft something truly distinct — a balanced blend that reflects both the complexity of their experience and the depth of their commitment. The result: a whiskey blend from 46% bourbon, 47% rye, and 7% malted barley whiskey. The bourbon and malted components are distilled at Cedar Ridge, while the rye is sourced from undisclosed Kentucky and Indiana distilleries — with strong indicators pointing to MGP in Lawrenceburg, a cornerstone of American rye. Each component in the blend is aged at least four years in #3 char American oak barrels.

Crafted with a distinctive blend and a bold identity, this whiskey is undeniably unique in its makeup. But the real question is: does it taste as good as its story sounds?

Cold Zero Whiskey Review

The nose opens with rich prunes and the dark, smoky character of charred orange peel. Notes of black pepper and dry tobacco follow, adding a dry spice that pulls back any lingering sweetness from the fruit. While the initial aroma hints at intensity, the palate reintroduces sweetness in the form of dark brown sugar and ripe dates.

As the sip develops, nutmeg and a trace of honey build complexity, supported by a dense, weighty mouthfeel. The finish leans earthy and spiced—think raisin bread and toasted pecans—before taking a surprising turn with a clean snap of peppermint. It all settles with a final touch of vanilla that lingers just long enough to invite another sip.

Cold Zero Whiskey stands apart with a distinctive profile that will appeal to thoughtful whiskey drinkers. Murphy Quint’s skill in blending is clearly at work here, offering a whiskey that delivers both character and craftsmanship—backed by a mission that gives each bottle added meaning.

92 proof.
