Just curious, how did whiskey get its reputation?

It seems like online and in bars and music whatnot, whiskey is portrayed as a ‘manly’ drink and you’re ‘cool’ if you can drink it. I personally don’t like whiskey. Japanese suntory is tolerable. But the rest ugh.
