Review: Munity Island Roots Ginger and Tumeric Infused Vodka

Back in February we reviewed Mutiny Island’s flagship vodka, which is made from Breadfruit in St. Croix. We were impressed by the flavor profile of Mutiny Island’s vodka and pleasantly surprised that breadfruit not only didn’t create an unpleasant experience, but added a unique texture and a welcoming flavor.

Recently, the folks at Mutiny Island sent us Roots, a ginger and turmeric infused vodka. They source its ginger and turmeric from local St. Croix farms whenever possible. The infusion process takes 3 to 4 days, during which the processed ginger and turmeric steep in large tea bag-like pouches to impart maximum flavor into the original vodka base. Then the infused vodka is sweetened with a touch of honey.

Let’s give it a try.

Munity Island Roots Ginger and Tumeric Infused Vodka Review

The liquid in the bottle is cloudy with sediment, so I gave the bottle a light shake before I opened it. If I know a brand produces quality products I get rather excited when I see cloudy spirits that have been infused, as it often means that the ingredients are all natural. On the nose it seems that the aroma is coming from real ginger and turmeric. No one note overtakes the other; the aroma has a lovely aromatic balance to it.

The character and texture from the flagship is intact, but it comes with a punch of fresh ginger juice with the turmeric in the background. The flavor of the underlying vodka has not been wiped out, and although the initial rush of it feels heavy, the flavors calm exactly when they are supposed to. There is a hint of sweetness which is more detectable halfway through the glass, pleasant and clean.

This vodka served on ice with a twist of lime is fantastic, especially on a warm spring day, an excellent way to feel like you’re drinking a cocktail without making a cocktail. I was curious how this vodka would play in a Moscow Mule — and with a splash of club soda and lime, there was no need for ginger beer. The turmeric adds a really nice earthy component to the overall flavor. I love this bottle for cocktails and played around with several tropical style drinks and it was a perfect match. My favorite cocktail however to make with Roots is a play on a Bee’s Knees. Recipe below!

80 proof.
