Review: Wines of Anaba, 2025 Releases
We last visited the wines of Somona-based Anaba in 2022, and now the boutique operation is back with a trio of fresh offerings for us to taste through. These wines run the gamut from summer sippers to bold, fall-friendly reds, so pull up a chair and a glass.
2023 Anaba Picpoul Blanc Sonoma Valley – Crisp and fruity, this is a lovely expression of picpoul that avoids the biting acidity that can impact some expressions of the grape. Instead, the wine cuts a lively and bracing profile, still heavy with acid but tempered by plenty of fruit — first lemon, them melon, and finally a touch of coconut milk, which adds just the lightest hint of creaminess on a lasting finish. A lovely journey in a glass, it hit the spot perfectly as the weather starts to heat up around my parts. A / $38
2021 Anaba Pinot Noir Sangiacomo Roberts Road Vineyard – A lush pinot noir from the Petaluma Gap, here we find a bold attack of tart cherries followed by a punch of bitter rhubarb, then a hint of mint and a note of baking spice. The tart cherry notes endure well into the finish, dominating a conclusion that features some dark chocolate, then a pinch of cloves. A well-rounded — and well-traveled — pinot noir that hits all the high points, and some unexpected notes, too. A- / $74
2022 Anaba Turbine Red Sonoma County – A Rhone-style blend of 40% mourvedre, 30% syrah, 24% grenache, and 6% petite sirah. This is an outstanding wine that evokes some of the best elements of the Rhone, showcasing layers of currants and cherries complemented by elements of anise, graphite, and dark chocolate. Extremely cohesive and well-integrated, everything here is firing on all cylinders and working well together, right through to the lengthy, seductive finish. A / $48
