Review: 10 Barrel Brewing Money Cat Japanese Style Lager

Who doesn’t love a cold glass of Sapporo or Kirin alongside a nice plate of sushi? Not 10 Barrel, that’s who. 10 Barrel’s Money Cat is a Japanese-style lager brewed with rice, now available in cans for the first time (in addition to kegs).

There’s an unmistakable rice-ness to this beer, with a flavor that is hard to describe but easy to place — slightly sweet and cantaloupe-tinged, with notes of toasted biscuits, honey grahams, and sesame oil. It tastes like a fortune cookie — which is probably, well, exactly the point — with a sweet finish that, again, leans hard into melon. Call it honeydew here, or Asian pear, maybe. That’s not a melon, but you get the idea. Don’t email me.
