Does Alcohol make you lose touch with reality?

I have a mate who got drunk off lots of apple ciders and was vomiting pretty badly.

The next day he told me that “life doesn’t feel real.” He says he’s unable to make decisions, he feels everyone’s pissed off at him, he gets pissed off quite easily as well and feels overall unlike himself. Is this a common side effect of heavy drinking or is it something more severe?
