Review: Michter’s Single Barrel Straight Bourbon 10 Years Old 2025
The latest in Michter’s long-running lineup of 10 year old single barrel bourbons is here. As Michter’s notes, there’s no set schedule for these releases, though summertime is a good bet for when they arrive. (That said, Michter’s skipped a release in 2022.) The good news is that the whiskey has made it, and little in the construction of the bourbon has changed: It’s still a sourced Kentucky bourbon, “overaged beyond 10 years” — but no one’s saying how overaged, and bottled at exactly 47.2% abv.
Let’s dive in.
Michter’s Single Barrel Straight Bourbon 10 Years Old 2025 Review
Michter’s always connotes a bolder, more aggressive to me — and in his review of the 2023 10 year old single barrel bourbon, Drew mentioned an uncharacteristic intensity — evoking cigar box and baking chocolate on the nose. That isn’t the case here, as the whiskey cuts a decidedly soft profile — perhaps one of the gentlest Michter’s expressions I’ve seen to date. Very fruity with raspberry and strawberry notes but backed up by notes of baking spice, crumbled graham cracker pie crust, and a healthy layer of cinnamon, the nose enchants with very much a dessert-like profile. A little time in glass allows some lightly charred notes to come to the fore, but it never develops the pungency you’d expect from a 10 year old bourbon, and rather clings to its exuberant fruit for ages.
The palate does not rock the boat, though there’s a little more to the body than the comparatively delicate nose would suggest. Here the cinnamon and the mix of berries combine to create a cobbler-like experience, quite sweet and, I have to say, very seductive, with a lush body that feels like it wouldn’t be out of place in a glass of Port wine. The sweetness and the dessert-like character both endure for ages. Late in the game, some gentle greenery notes layer on sprigs of mint and an echo of rosemary, culminating in a finish that is equal parts fruit and spice. The fade-out connotes allspice, nutmeg, and the tiniest pinch of pepper all layered with caramel sauce.
The low-ish abv works well for this whiskey, helping to keep its more delicate flavors from getting washed away by alcohol. The price for Michter’s 10 Year Old Bourbon is starting to creep up there, but the investment may well be worth it for those interested in something with a bit more nuance than the typical double-digit aged offering.
