Chaser or no Chaser?

Any hard liquor (rum, vodka, whiskey, etc) drinkers here are free to answer.

Do y’all need a chaser when you take a shot?

About a year ago I got blackout drunk on Jack Daniels (stupidly drank almost an entire bottle on an empty stomach) and ever since I can’t do hard liquor without a chaser. Any ideas as to why? Also, do y’all prefer your drinks straight or with a chaser? Why or why not?
