Review: NV Bon Vivant California Sparkling Wine and Sparkling Rose

Bon Vivant’s California Sparkling Wines are designed to be high-quality but no-frills offerings, presenting celebratory bottlings that won’t break the bank. We tasted both expressions available — both of which are non-vintage offerings. Intriguingly, both are 60% chardonnay, 40% pinot noir.

NV Bon Vivant California Sparkling Wine – Big apple and pear notes dominate a creamy, Cremant-like body, which highlights overtones of toasted coconut and the foamed milk resting atop a latte. Crisp and fruity on the finish, with a sweetness that evokes memories of Apple Jacks. That said, I was a Cocoa Puffs guy. B+ / $30

NV Bon Vivant California Sparkling Rose – Not overly different from the Brut expression, with apples and pears remaining dominant on the attack. A hint of strawberry and a rose petal floral note are in the mix, but neither is particular earnest, the finish bright but laced with a little vanilla. Again, breakfast cereal on Sunday morning isn’t out of the picture. B+ / $34
