“Local hangout” vs “Mixology bar?”

So I’m in Massachusetts and wouldn’t mind trying some craft cocktails. I know there are some places in Boston, but they look really, “wear a suit.” Is there’s such a thing as a, “nicer than 3 smokers just outside the front door with Miller or vodka tonic, bar,” but not like, “valet parking for my Porsche?” How do you tell before going there it’s the right fit for what you’re looking for? Or can you?
