Review: Tamworth Garden Spring Equinox Gin
We’re always excited to see a new gin release from Tamworth Distilling, which is based in New Hampshire. Their Spring Equinox Gin is a single-batch release and includes six botanicals: fresh celery, lemon petitgrain, juniper, black pepper, lavender, and angelica. These ingredients are distilled using a rotary evaporator. Let’s give it a try.
Tamworth Garden Spring Equinox Gin Review
Poured in a glass, this gin bursts with clean, clear aromas of piney juniper, celery, lavender, earthiness, and light citrus. It’s impressive how distinctly the individual elements appear on the nose.
On the palate, however, the gin takes a pointed turn with musky earthiness assuming a dominant role. Celery, juniper, lavender, and pepper play second fiddle, appearing midpalate. The gin’s earthiness then returns for the long finish.
This is not a gin for everyone, and those looking for a London Dry style should probably steer clear, though the gin’s earthy character will likely draw a following. It is deep, dank, and enjoyable on its own and its various notes come together even better when it is served with an ice cube or two.
I tried the gin in a martini and found it did not play nicely with dry vermouth at all. Interestingly, with tonic, it works much better. The earthy notes are still primary, but with the gin, they blend gently with the juniper, lavender, and lightly sweet bitterness.
80 proof.
