Review: Larceny Barrel Proof Bourbon Batch A125 (January 2025)
The first edition of Larceny Barrel Proof for 2025 is upon us, and you won’t find any major surprises in store for round A125, officially released in January of 2025 — at least when it comes to production. The new labels are now in effect, as is the production process and barrel selection methodology.
Curiously, the proof level of 125 is identical to the batch number. The OCD among us can rejoice at the happy coincidence.
Let’s give this whiskey a taste.
Larceny Barrel Proof Bourbon Batch A125 (January 2025) Tasting Notes
While Larceny Barrel Proof can often come across with lots of barrel influence, this expression comes across with the softness of a summer breeze. Very buttery and nutty on the nose, the aromas evoke butterscotch, nutmeg, and a healthy brown banana quality — almost banana bread-like, particularly with the layer of roasted walnuts that both enhances and tempers the fruity-sweet experience. Time in glass shows the whiskey developing a slightly leathery character, with overtones of hemp rope.
The palate has a lot of similar qualities, though a more citrus-forward element comes into focus in short order, fading eventually against the surge of toasted/roasted nuts in the glass. Time in glass is helpful as the whiskey settles down into a more familiar groove, showcasing graphite, maple, and orange peel notes, then later a smattering of baking spices. Old Fashioned fodder? Yes, please.
The finish is sunny and easy-drinking, with something of a toffee quality to it. Summery and approachable at full proof despite a 62.5% abv, this is a crowd-pleaser from the Larceny lineup that should make just about everyone happy.
125 proof.
