Review: Pasote Tequila Blanco Still Strength

Pasote hit the scene in 2016, and we were huge fans of one of its inaugural expressions in particular, the reposado, which even made our holiday guide that year.

Nine years later Pasote is back with a line extension — its blanco delivered at still strength, a whopping 55% abv.

The aggressive vegetality of the standard 80-proof blanco is on full display here, evoking aromas of bell pepper and green bean, both blasting out of the glass. A healthy lemon zest note — again, much like that found in the standard blanco — takes its time to creep into focus, but before long there’s little else you can smell.

The palate is certainly eye-watering at full strength, but it’s manageable, as is the intensely green agave character at play — almost jalapeno-like and quite herbal. The citrus notes are sweeter here, however, evoking notes of lemon curd and, later, a hint of coconut cream. A slight touch of anise informs the finish, though the intense greenery continues to do most of the heavy lifting.

All told it’s a rather familiar tequila that doesn’t overly defy expectations — though the extra punch does help distinguish it from (and elevate it above) Pasote’s standard blanco.

110 proof. NOM 1584.
