Dos Equis Ambar Especial, Four Loko Sour Apple [First Impressions]

9/10 and my new favorite beer by far. I previously tried: Bud Light, PBR, Miller High Life (still fantastic!), Corona Extra, Modelo, Blue Moon, and Heinekin. I probably missed a few, but there is some context.

This Mexican import beer has been praised by Alabama Boss within Rated Red on YouTube which is a guy that I like to hear opinions from. Dos Equis is one of his favorites so I got myself some at the local convenience store, and I am glad I did. He is right. This one has only light bitterness, sweet notes, a savory middle note (some wood?) that’s a little dry, and an aftertaste that reminds me of apple pie. Keep in mind that I’m only two bottles in so my opinion may change a bit but beer doesn’t typically taste like this. The only way this beer could have a 10/10 is if it had no bitterness at all! But it’s not much. I can still tell it’s a beer from the malty taste but there is more going on.

From another redditor’s recommendation I tried Four Loko Sour Apple this same night. I give it a 4/10 if the Loko USA is a 3/10, Sour Grape is a 1/10. It has the same overbearing bitterness that Four Loko has to offer, but the apple taste is relatively natural albeit with a candy-like overtone, I’m mostly tasting the skin of a green apple. The harshness is quite strong, and it is too sweet for its own good so I can give it a 4/10. Somehow it tastes worse the more I drink it. I had to dump the rest when I was 3/4 through it, the liquid looked like drain cleaner! I will take it over other Four Loko flavors, but this is only good if your intention is to get drunk for $3 which is fair enough knowing how expensive alcohol can get. I love the idea of a cheap buzz, but I want it to taste good. I’m wondering if Four Loko is intentionally super bitter so people don’t drink it too fast. I will try Beatbox within the next few days as I hear it is significantly easier to drink.
