Taking a shot in someone’s stead

Not sure if this is the right subreddit for this, and it might be a dumb question, but I want to ask if taking a shot in someone’s stead is a common thing for others?

In my country, the normal set-up for drinking is to just have one shot glass. There’s someone (called tanggero) who pours the shot and each person at the table takes a turn on drinking.

Sometimes, when a person can’t take any more shot (most likely during a drinking game where tapping out has another consequence), another person does it for them. Usually, you do this for your close friend or your significant other, and it’s a way to let them know that “I got you”. It’s also become a way for people to hint their romantic feelings or crush. It’s like saying, “I’m willing to do this for you”.

Is this also a thing in other cultures? If not, do you have anything similar?
