Review: 2022 Sokol Blosser Grenache Syrah Mourvedre Columbia Valley

Sokol Blosser is known for its Oregon-born wines, but this GSM blend hails from Washington’s Columbia Valley. It’s a limited edition Rhone style blend that was originally thought to be unworkable due to early frost, but which was surprisingly salvaged when secondary buds emerged on the vines. Let’s see how it tastes!

I initially found this wine a little off-putting, overly beefy and earthy. A little time in glass and a slight chill helped even things out, giving the wine a clearer fruit component — cherry and plum, melded with rhubarb, along with some duskier cinnamon notes. The beefy quality doesn’t really fade, but eventually it comes to complement some of the darker fruit notes that develop with time in glass. It’s husky and a bit musky on the finish, though surprisingly gentle, even mild, in body throughout the experience. At 14% abv, I would have expected a somewhat bolder punch, but the slimmer structure works well enough when sipping with a meal.
