Review: Papapietro Perry 2022 Chardonnay Peters Vineyard and 2021 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley

Papapietro Perry doesn’t just have one of the liveliest company names in Sonoma, it also makes some of its best, under-the-radar wines. 2024’s releases include these two wines, both from the Russian River Valley which Pappietro Perry calls home.

2022 Papapietro Perry Chardonnay Peters Vineyard – Russian River Valley chardonnay, on point. Oak and vanilla are evident and well-integrated into a palate that melds notes of baked apples, quince, and mandarin oranges into a lush, cohesive whole. Creamy but lightly spiked with salinity and a little acidity, this is never the buttery oak bomb that fells many other Sonoma chardonnays. Rather, its fruit and wood elements complement one another en route to a brisk but fruit-forward finish that drinks beautifully solo, even better with the right food pairing. A / $58

2021 Papapietro Perry Pinot Noir Russian River Valley – A soft but slightly spicy pinot, this wine features a plump cherry core and moves quickly into a racier element — showcasing ginger-heavy baking spices, cinnamon, and a layer of vanilla. Tea leaf emerges late in the game, but with this vintage it comes across as sweeter and largely devoid of tannin. It’s all a bit of a departure from the usual Russian River style, which is typically much more dense and earthy, and that makes for a wine which drinks well on a summertime afternoon but which requires a bit of thought when pairing with a meal. A spicy Korean-style burger did the trick for me. A- / $66
