Review: 2021 Tapestry Red Blend Paso Robles
Let’s clear up some things to start.
Not to be confused with Beaulieu Vineyard’s other wine named Tapestry (a longtime favorite from the brand), the new Tapestry is also made by a winery owned by BV… though it doesn’t carry their name anywhere on the label. Perhaps that’s because this new Tapestry is made in Paso Robles, not Napa. The blend is one of “select varietals” — for this inaugural vintage, that’s 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Syrah, and 12% Petite Sirah, a considerably different makeup vs. the Bordeaux-style Napa rendition.
So, with that prologue, let’s give it a whirl.
That this is an ink-black wine should surprise no one, as it’s made from three of the densest and darkest grapes grown in California. Initially a little overwhelming with dark, extracted fruit, the wine doesn’t present so much as jammy as it does sultry, layering its notes of dried figs and black currants with a gentle note of anise, strawberry vines, and rhubarb. Bold plum and chocolate notes dominate a chewy, semi-sweet finish. It’s a dense and somewhat brooding wine on the whole, but agreeable at this price.
B+ / $25
