What did I have?

I am fairly new to alcohol (just 21) but I do know what I like. I was at a restaurant and ordered a Tom Collins. To my knowledge it should be, give or take a couple things: gin, lemon, and soda in a tall glass. However I recieved a still drink (not carbonated) with lime in a short glass. Is there something I’m missing here? Is this common?
