Looking to find a “trademark” type hard liquer that’s good to have on one’s person
Hello. I am not particularly into drinking past taking sips for the savory experience. With exceptions being the occasional bad day where you have to “dip in” to the bottle a bit and have 3 or 4 drinks on strange night. I am looking for something reliable, slightly sophisticated but not too much, and tasty. However, I’m not looking for bottom-level drinks that are cheap with the highest abv. I’m not trying to optimize alcoholism. Lots of people have that one main drink they enjoy, and I have yet to find that. I’d even take suggestions for proper mixed drinks.
Here are the drinks I enjoy:
Jim Beam straight rye – a little lacking. Has a pleasant savory note at the end, but tastes a bit watered down and slightly off.
Jim Beam Black Extra Aged Burbon – A better bodied spirit. Not fantastic but definitely tastes like something that deserves to be drunk.
Whitley Neill London dry gin – pretty good. Not super overpowering, but has taste. Although having too much makes you ill and feeling trapped in a pine forest. Gin and tonic is amazing, but it wears you down.
Tanqueray London Dry Gin – Not as good as Whitley Neill. Much more sickness inducing, in my opinion. Makes a less good, but still acceptable gin and tonic.
Rum – in general, I do not like it. Often tastes like it’s lacking major tastes and flavors. Bacardi Gold Rum was alright. Good mixed into ginger beer. But still tastes watery and “off”.
Rock and Rye – very pleasant to drink. Not exactly candy or super sophisticated, but definitely makes the rye flavor shine. Very tasty, but lacking some harshness.
Vodka – the ultimate neutral drink. It’s water and alcohol, I don’t know what else someone could want. However, it lacks a soul. There’s nothing about it that justifies drinking it unless one wants to get drunk. It’s pointless unless intending to become intoxicated.
Tequila – only tried 1800 and it’s icky but I find myself wanting more for no good reason. Kind of tastes like the way I’d expect a trashed motel room to smell. It literally upset my entire sense of taste perception for a bit.
I had a whiskey old fashioned at the bar, it was kind of underwhelming.
I have recently begun to tolerate certain bitter flavors, such as IPA beers. However, I find bitterness to on occasion, remind me of eating something poison. I want to avoid bitter flavor unless it is the best damn bitter flavor out there.
Anyone have any suggestions on what they enjoy, and what I might enjoy?
